Industrial Work Experience
As part of the Computer, Electronic and Communications Engineering degree programmes students are required, in the third year of their degree, to attain six months experience working in industry. This is done by way of block-release - in Semester 2 of year 3, the student works for a block of six consecutive months, usually from March to September.
Placements are made available through the Department of Electronic Engineering in consultation with companies and enterprises, both national and international. In addition to the main thrust of the placement programme, which is to give students an experience of their 'academic' subjects in action as well as playing a part in their professional education, some companies consider the placement to be a way of assessing students for future full-time employment. This can considerably improve student employment opportunities through (a) cultivating a relationship with a particular company and (b) acquiring an awareness of how engineering companies operate, gaining industrial experience and becoming more proficient at application and interview technique.
Students are placed in companies both in Ireland and abroad. In Ireland students are placed in both small indigenous Irish companies and in larger national and multi-national companies. The list below is a sample of some companies involved in our placement programme:
- ADC GmbH (Germany)
- Airtricity
- Analog Devices
- Daimler/Crysler (Germany)
- Esat BT
