Dr. Solomiya Lebid, Dept of Electronic Engineering, NUI Maynooth Title: Fibre Bragg grating sensors and possibilities of their application Abstract: Bragg grating-based devices are an ubiquitous component in novel technology vision. The very nature of Bragg devices is that they link the external environment directly to communication networks through fundamental physical processes. They are an integral part of the communication network that can be used as high-level functional components within the network but also to "feel" and "see" the surrounding environment and input this information directly into the network to which they belong. It is this fact that makes them such an important component in modern technological solutions. They have a myriad of uses both in existing and future fibre-optic telecommunication systems, and they are arguably the most adaptable and versatile sensor technology of recent decades. It is Bragg grating technology that will allow "computers and networks to be integrated into the everyday environment", and Bragg gratings that will be at the core of these communications networks. It is essential that European science is at the forefront of the development of this vital technology
