This project examined both the forecasting requirements for wave energy device control systems and the comparative forcastability of ocean waves. The objective is to achieve optimal energy transfer from waves to wire and it is well known that the optimal control strategy requires a forecast of the wave excitation force some seconds (or,in some cases, tens of seconds) ahead. The sensitivity to forecast errors is also examined, as well as techniques which can reduce the sensitivity of the optimal control to errors in the forecast.
